Don't say: I asked Paul if he was going.
Say: I asked Paul whether he was going.
Say: I shall speak to him if he comes.

Quando você usa " If " você não espera por uma resposta afirmativa ou negativa.
O uso de " whether " requer uma resposta afirmativa ou negativa.
